But as it turns out, theresÃ more to this variety of storytelling than colorfully-dressed, muscly people with inhuman powers! In fact, while superhero comics have their place (and its a big place, mind you), there are a whole host of graphic novels about real-world issues that delve into intriguing, funny, mysterious, and even downright scary stories.To help you get started on this exciting, visual reading adventure, we put our heads together,Ã had some discussions about our favorite graphic novels, and finally compiledÃ the top tenÃ initial must-readsÃ into this list. (The Joker features prominently in this story, and he is the biggest baddie of the baddies, if you dont mind me saying so.) Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons This is the comic that put superhero comics on the map- and elevated them to a more adult audience. Set in the 1980s,Ã Watchmen follows the journey of retired heroes forced back into actionÃ with the onset of nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union. The half-psychotic and gone-to-seed vigilante Rorschach uncovers a dastardly plot to murder the remaining superheroes and millions of civilians, and is forced to drag his fellow out-of-shape superfriends out of retirement to put an end to the madness. Set in a totalitarian England, in the aftermath of a globe-changing war, we follow the lives of a mysterious man in a white, porcelain mask and his young protÃ ©gÃ © as they fight political oppression through seemingly meaningless acts of terrorism. In a world where personal freedom is entirely nonexistent, the lines between ideologically-based notions of good and evil are inherently blurred, leaving it up to the reader to determine who is right and who is wrong. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Volume 1 2Ã by Alan Moore and Kevin ONeill If youve ever wanted to see some of your favorite literary characters united and fighting crime, then look no further thanÃ The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen! Mina Harker (who had a bit of a nasty run-in with Count Dracula back in Transylvania), Captain Nemo (who captained the Nautilus inÃ 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea), Allan Quatermain (assistant to King Solomon), and many more are brought into the same timeline and must set out to conquer famous the villain Fu Manchu (of his own series and fame). Saga of the Swamp Thing by Alan Moore If youve gained only one thing from this list, let it be that Alan Moore is a comic-creating genius. Swamp Thing is another comic character who, like Batman, has been around forever. UnlikeÃ Batman,Ã Swamp Thing was in real danger of cancellation back in the 80s, that is, before Moore got around to saving the day (and the franchise). Taking place in, you guessed it, 1602, our favorite Marvel superheroes (and villains) have been transported to the Elizabethan Era,Ã where they face the usual suspects of good and evil, but also some more complicatedÃ adversaries, like their own government embarking on a witch hunt, and the presence of a hero who isnt quite sure which century hes in. Published in 2002, the writing ofÃ Marvel 1602 began almost immediately following the 9/11 terrorist attacks; author Neil Gaiman was loathe to create a typical comic set in theÃ modern era that involved any modern weapons or that contained the ideologyÃ ofÃ might equals right. This task was to include education in a performance to be shown to primary school children. This performance needed to reflect on issues understood by children of this age and to be clear and straight forward while explaining the message. Three weeks ago we were set an assignment to last until now. This task was to include education in a performance to be shown to primary school children. This performance needed to reflect on issues understood by children of this age and to be clear and straight forward while explaining the message. My first reaction when I heard of this task was one of excitement and anxiety. I knew this assignment would be challenging which made me very eager to start as soon as possible. However I was worried as I knew that all ideas would have to be adapted for the age group and that there would be censorship issues. There were many ideas put in to a discussion on the first day of the task. Within our group these were our main ideas-Abuse, drugs, smoking, trust issues & bullying. However we knew most of these ideas were not compatible for the age group of the audience so we narrowed it down to three main ideas-smoking, trust issues & bullying. We knew that whatever idea we used we would have to make it humorous to allow the children to enjoy themselves. We also had some ideas on how to portray these ideas allowing the audience to understand and enjoy the humour. These ideas were- Men In Black(spoof), Batman(spoof) & Spider pants (original character made from typical superhero names and character). During the rehearsals we went through the different ideas and at first we decided to act out bullying through peer pressure however when we performed this to the group we found that it was very boring which was not what we were aiming for. So we then changed to trust issues using spider pants (we could not use men in black as we found out it had already been done previously we also could not do batman due to the costumes and props needed to make it realistic),However we were unable to carry out our idea of spider pants due to the unfortunate absents by myself and another person in the group & so when we performed this it did not come out right. We then eventually changed to a play about kidnappers. This entailed the theme of trust issues and was comical. It was not only the ideas that would not work though, we soon found that some members of our group were not prepared to work to the extent

Importance of Character Development in Short Stories The anticipation of the audience towards a short story is often based on how strongly and deeply characters are developed. The audience often sympathizes with some characters simply because they can relate to their story. They may also feel disassociated with some characters because of their unpleasant nature. Having that said, character development amplifies the enthusiasm and interest of the audience by providing them access to the charactersÃ¢â¬â¢ motives and perspectives throughout the story.
